Just eight three-year-olds have been included in nominations for this weekend’s Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens, highlighted by some of the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival’s most exciting young prospects.
Charging home to finish a close second to Hallowed Crown in the featured Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) last time out, trainer Paul Messara has nominated Scissor Kick for the 2014 Stan Fox Stakes.
Securing an impressive total of three wins and one minor from his five competitive starts so far, Scissor Kick has returned to the track in exceptional form this time in and will be contesting his final competitive start in the Stan Fox Stakes ahead of his major spring target; the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 11th.
Winning a minor by three lengths first-up on July 23rd, the Redoute’s Choice colt repeated the dose in both the Listed Rosebud (1200m) and Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) prior to his impressive run for second in the Golden Rose.
Also included in nominations for the 2014 Stan Fox Stakes is Golden Rose third place-getter Shooting To Win.
Finishing outside the places just once in his five start career so far, Shooting stamped his claims as one to watch immediately upon debuting to racing in late autumn; winning two minor events in New South Wales with ease.
Disappointing when beating a single runner home in the Up And Coming Stakes first-up, the Northern Meteor colt finished second in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) before securing his most impressive result to date in the Golden Rose.
Also set on a path towards the Caulfield Guineas, trainers Peter and Paul Snowden were understandably thrilled with Shooting To Win’s maiden Group 1 appearance last time out and are confident in continued success in the Stan Fox Stakes.
While disappointing in the Golden Rose last time out, a step-up in distance to 1500m for the 2014 Stan Fox Stakes should play directly into the strengths of nominee Scratch Me Lucky.
Contesting three events in the late stages of the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, Scratch Me Lucky returned to racing in great condition over the Autumn Carnival; winning a minor over 1200m and continuing to build in form and class on his way to second in both the Group 3 The Schweppervescence (1400m) and Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) most notably.
Confident the Snitzel colt will be better for two competitive performances, trainer Paul Perry is hopeful of a return to contention for Scratch Me Lucky ahead of a likely Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) berth in October.
Trainer Gai Waterhouse is set to be offered a great chance of success in the 2014 Stan Fox Stakes, nominating Valentia for Saturday’s Rosehill Group 2.
Claiming two wins and as many minor places from just six starts so far, Valentia more than stamped his claims as a serious black type contender when charging home to win the Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m) on April 5th, but failed to fire when 12th in the Golden Slipper in his follow-up performance.
A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 Stan Fox Stakes is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
