Conducted by the Australian Jockey Club, the $150,000 Stan Fox Stakes is run over a distance of 1400m and is known by racing enthusiasts to expose some of the best emerging turf talent that will go on to dominate the major Sydney and Melbourne Spring races. This is why so many punters are attracted to the Stan Fox Stakes and what makes betting on the race so exciting.

Notable winners who later proved to be impressive runners include Lonhro (2001), Kenwood Melody (1998) and Octagonal (1995).

Stan Fox Stakes Betting Guide

There is a huge variety of key lead-up races held earlier in the carnival that are a good guide to the Stan Fox including the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1000m) in early August, the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) for the higher rated runners, or the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) the week before.

The best three-year-olds from the carnival who have also competed in some of the more lucrative and prestigious events including the Group 1 $ million Golden Rose will often be found on the field for the Stan Fox, continuing their campaign and hoping to secure a few more wins before the coveted Caulfield Guineas in Victoria.

Many trainers prepare their hopefuls for the Caulfield Guineas with a run in the Stan Fox, and their performance there can go a long way in determining their odds for the Guineas. So if you are planning to place a wager on the Caulfield Guineas later in the season, this is the race to watch. And you could clean up in both events if you study the form and career history of the runners carefully!

Stan Fox Stakes History

The first running of the Stan Fox Stakes was in 1975 when Hydahban won. Back then it was a principal race run over 1200m. It became a listed race in 1985 when the distance increased to 1400m. A few years later in 1989 the race attained Group 3 status, before becoming a Group 2 event in 1996. As the race has increased in status so too has the quality of the contending horses, each year the field is more impressive and the race more sensational!

All major Australian bookmakers including SportsBet open betting markets on the Stan Fox Stakes and placing a wager on these up-and-coming three-year-olds is a great way to get in on the action of the Sydney Spring Carnival.
